José Hernández,
A Million Miles Away

In the vast expanse of the universe, there are stories that remind us of the limitless possibilities of human potential. One such tale is that of José Hernández, the man behind the awe-inspiring journey chronicled in the movie “A Million Miles Away.” This remarkable individual started as an immigrant farmworker and went on to defy the odds by becoming an astronaut.

José Hernández’s story is a testament to resilience, hard work, and unwavering determination. Born to Mexican migrant farmworker parents in California, Hernández faced the challenges of a modest upbringing and a language barrier. However, he held onto a dream that seemed as distant as the stars themselves: becoming an astronaut.

To achieve his dream, Hernández pursued an education in engineering, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of the Pacific and a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His relentless pursuit of knowledge paid off when he was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 2004.
